Otjivalunda Salt Pans



  • The 2 salt pans representing the potential deposits are situated in state land immediately to the North of the Etosha National Park and approximately 90 km South of the town of Oshakati
  • Onkani, the nearest village is located 50 km north of the pans
  • 55 km from nearest gravel road (DR3643)
  • 175 km from nearest railway head at Ondangwa
  • GPS coordinates 15.602, -18.655
  • No infrastructure exists at the pans
  • The proposed processing plant shall be located 10km West of Oshakati and 120km by road from the pans


Resource and Reserves

  • The pans contain a variety of sodium sulphates and sodium carbonates over a collective extent of 700ha
  • The two potential deposits comprise at total of approximately 5.3 million tons
  • More than 400 exploration holes have been drilled and the resource is well defined


Production planned

  • Mining, crushing and de-sliming of the salts envisaged at the deposit
  • Transport of Run-off-Mine products to processing plant in close proximity to the town of Oshakati
  • Dissolution, purification and spray-dryer crystallization at the processing plant.
  • Existing power, water and road infrastructure available at the plant
  • Transport of purified sodium sulphate to market by road and/or rail
  • Production of washing powder at the processing plant


Current Status

  • The salt pans are situated within EPL 4365 which covers 20,650 hectares, and which is granted to a SPV, Ondonga-Uukwambi Mining Enterprises (Pty) Ltd of which Gecko is a 50% shareholder
  • Gecko has conducted and filed a comprehensive EIA with the Namibian authorities and await approval
  • Mining plan, transport plan and pre-feasibility studies have been completed
  • Once the EIA is approved, application will be made for a Mining License



  • The project is done in partnership with the Local Authorities
  • The project will bring much needed economic stimulus to the region and provide substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities
